Vicki Irvin-Pick Your Battles! Maryland Real Estate Investing

Well this is our last day before Thanksgiving! It’s one of my favorite holidays, I love for the family to get together and have a relaxing day of enjoying each other, giving thanks for all of our blessings, and of course…..EATING WELL! Each year my mother in law and I plan out the thanksgiving meal and divide up who will cook what. Last year I made my first turkey and it was delicious. I’m not sure if I got lucky or what, but I came up with a strategy. This year I decided to order a fried turkey from a girlfriend who is a caterer. See, I figured that with a couple years between my first turkey that turned out so great, people will forget in case the next one I bake is not as good as the first. I know that sounds petty, but my husband is such a food critic and I don’t want to give him any ammunition!

As you can see I am very competitive. My husband LOVES macaroni and cheese, or should I say his MOM’s Mac n cheese! One year I was determined to make one just as good as hers or even better. Well, that didn’t quite work out! Although it was pretty good, I have to admit it didn’t hold up to MOTHER’S. So this year my mother in law asked if I wanted to make the macaroni and cheese. I thought about it briefly, but decided it wasn’t a battle I wanted to take on. Why deprive my husband of his mother’s specialty, after all he only gets it once a year.

I guess what I am trying to say is that some battles are not worth fighting. The same principle applies when you are trying to make a positive change in your life. If you tell your dreams, goals and aspirations to some people, they will shoot them down. Sometimes it is jealousy and sometimes it’s just because they can’t see your vision. I know when that has happened to me, I would fight and fight to make people see my point of view, or try to get them to support me. That didn’t work too often and rather than have people bring my drive or energy down, I started keeping my dreams to myself, or only sharing them with the couple of people who were encouraging.

Trust me when I say this…when you do reach your goals and realize your dreams, you will no longer have to verbally convince people of anything. Those same dream thieves will now be your best friends all of a sudden! And it is a GOOD feeling!
