Do YOU Know What You Do?

What a week! Last weekend my women’s real estate investing retreat turned out to be even more than I expected! Over 100 women came out for two jam-packed days of learning and releasing! We cried, we hugged, we supported and most of all….they learned how to invest in real estate! To top off a great event, my husband surprised me with a trip to Miami where I was able to relax and enjoy the company of good friends. The requests for me to do more women’s only retreats are pouring in, people have seen the video and pictures. It was truly a rewarding experience!

My husband and I hosted our monthly marketing meeting last night. Each month people travel near and far to hear us talk about marketing strategies and how to get more clients. Last night we talked about a unique technique on how to use blogs. The people who were there couldn’t wait to get home and implement what we gave out into their own businesses. While the topic was a bit advanced, I want to get back to the basics.

I find that most people cannot tell you what they do in 30 seconds or less. If you are an entrepreneur, you should be able to clearly and concisely tell anyone what you do very quickly. Sounds simple, right? Well it’s not. You may know what it is that you do conceptually, but do you know how to translate that into a quick spiel that will capture the attention of the person inquiring? And I don’t mean using fancy words that they may not even understand. I am referring to statements that are attention grabbers and pique the interest of the person. Something that makes them say, WOW, tell me more. You only have a few seconds to captivate the attention of a prospect whether it be in person, on your web site, or any other form of advertising you use. So what you say has to be clear and interesting.

I’ll give you an example. I worked with a young lady last night at my meeting on this very exercise. She is in the field of performance improvement and her target market is business owners. She has the expertise of evaluating employees using various tools to measure performance on the job. Although that is exactly what she does, it isn’t clear to someone who is not in that field. If she was to be at an event talking to the CEO of a company trying to sell her service to them, that spiel probably would not grab their attention. BUT, if she said something like, I specialize in showing small business owners how they are losing thousands and thousands of dollars each month through poor employee training and hiring and how they can recover that money in 90 days. Now THAT would grab my attention if I was a CEO. Everyone wants to know how to recoup lost money or prevent losing money. At that point, the CEO would probably want to learn more right away!

This simple task sounds simple, but I challenge you to try it. You will probably find you need to practice and refine it. Try out what you come up with on friends or family and gauge the reactions you get. Test, test, test. Once you find a statement that is a winner, you are on your way!

I am headed out the door shortly to hit the gym. I have clear and distinct fitness goals for myself according to my body type and height etc. I receive emails from women all the time asking what I eat and my workout routine. What works for me, may not work for you. As women, we come in all shapes and sizes and we have to customize based on our body type. I am 5’9 so I am pretty tall. I like to look athletic so I lift weights to define my muscles and do minimal cardio. I have a metabolism where if I do too much cardio I can get too thin and I do not want that. So in order for me gain size and muscle I have to lift weights. For years I only did cardio because I loved to run. But that left me skinny and I didn’t like that. It was not until I began gaining muscle through lifting that I finally found the right combination for me.

Do not get caught up in how someone else looks. Make your fitness goals based on your body type and what you desire. Stop looking at the magazines! It’s ok to find a fitness role model, but there is no point in killing yourself on goals that you can’t achieve. Remember, fitness is about looking and feeling great. You have the power to control how you look and feel! Empower yourself today!

I have been working non-stop! Today, I decided to take a breather. I’m off to the gym to work out with my father-in-law and then I am going to do a whole bunch of NOTHING. I have some major real estate projects that are about to take the area by storm and my whirlwind will be starting up again. That is why I am taking some time to just relax. As women we think we have to keep on moving non-stop because that is what we are used to. But we are allowed to take time for ourselves…guilt free! Give yourself credit for all you do, remember you are human and enjoy all your accomplishments no matter how big or small. Otherwise life will just pass you by!
